The Euro is the official currency of 19 of the 28 Member States in the European Union. This group of states is known as the Eurozone or the Eurozone and has an estimated 343 million citizens as of 2019. The euro, divided into 100 cents, is the second largest and most traded currency in the foreign exchange market after the US dollar.

As of August 2018, with more than € 1.2 trillion in circulation, the euro has one of the largest combined values of banknotes and coins in circulation in the world, exceeding the US dollar.

The currency is also officially used by the institutions of the European Union, four non-EU European micro-stations, as well as unilateral Montenegro and Kosovo. Outside Europe, a number of specific EU member states also use the euro as their currency. In addition, over 200 million people worldwide use currencies linked to the euro.

The euro facilitates international shopping and enhances the experience of tourists in the countries that use it, but it is up to countries to assess whether these benefits outweigh the disadvantages of introducing the euro into their country and economy
